What is the difference between 2 cycle oil and regular motor oil?

Can regular motor oil be used instead? What is the difference between 2 cycle oil and regular motor oil?
2 cycle oil is meant to be mixed with gasoline at a predetermined ratio. i.e. chainsaws, dirtbikes. These engines do not use an oil pump/ sump. Lubrication is provided by fuel mix. Engine/motor oils have properties designed for use in a 4 cycle engine, like detergents and viscousity levels. Whatever you do NEVER use engine oil with gasoline for a 2cycle engine, you'll destroy the engine. What is the difference between 2 cycle oil and regular motor oil?
A ';few years ago, I bought a Vespa motor scooter from a friend. He said to make sure to put some oil in the gas.

How much? heck, I don't know, just dump about a half quart with every fill up. That should do it. Used up all my dad's extra motor oil, and it ran ok for a while.............

The person I sold the scooter to is still looking for me....

If you have a two cycle eng., use two cycle oil PERIOD!!
