What is the correct colour and consistency of engine oil?

My dad's car ( an 18yr old Ford Escort) has engine oil which is thick and jet black.

Yet my car is a 7 yr old Mgf and its engine oil is light brown and thin in consistency. Which one is correct? What is the correct colour and consistency of engine oil?
'; The Escort has not been serviced in ten years! No joke. '; .

Tell your tight wad old man to give it an oil and filter change for gods sake , that poor motor might even run a bit better . Failing that it will leak back out past the seals cos the oil will be thinner lol .

What is the correct colour and consistency of engine oil?
Thick and black is bad, your dad should get an oil change.

Good oil should be light brown/goldish in color, and thin.

Just look at the difference in your oil color and texture before and after an oil change, that will give you an idea.
Yours. When engine oil is thick and jet black it needs to be changed, which almost certainly means that the oil filter need to be changed as well. Has it been serviced in the last year? I'm guessing that it hasn't.
your car has the right color. looks like your dad,s car needs a oil and filter change. unless he got that graphite in his, it looks black when you buy it.
black is bad but really you cant tell by looking ... but blacker it is a better chance its time for a change yours is just Fresher
The black one is full of dirt the lighter one is clean. the old cars oil needs changing
all engine oils when new are golden brown, this darkens to black over time ur dad needs an oilchange,
